Last Wednesday Andi roped me into playing in Disc Wars which is a local indoor Ultimate Frisbee tournament. The teams were picked randomly and I ended up on a team with Simeon, which was a bit of a relief. I hate interacting with people I don't know at the best of times.so having Simeon on my team was a bonus. Bruce, the team captain, was also a great help. Very easy going/out going type who made allowances for the fact that this was the first time I'd ever played the game.

Really pushed myself the first day and had a great time. I found I was getting a reasonable amount positive feedback on my game from the other teams after each game and also second hand through Simeon, Andi and [info]golden_gir1 which was cool too. :)

Really shouldn't have pushed myself quite so hard though. Really feeling it the next day. Had 5 (6?) games on Sunday. Lost the first 3 but we'd gotten into the finals which we went on to win. Was kinda cool getting through to that point in a tournament. Especially considering it was the first time I'd ever played.

So, I finally have a sport to play. Go me. :) Starting regular games on Sunday afternoons and I'll see where it goes from there. Already committed to going to a tournament in Nelson in mid November. This one is outdoors (bigger field and wind needs to be contended with) and on sand. Can't wait :)

Warm up/down stretching exercises help a lot. Its easy to forget the warm down bit. I have a friend up here who plays Ultimate frisbee tournaments - spent half an hour two weeks ago listening to him explain the local frisbee politics of who gets to be in which team for tournaments. Almost as bad as the SCA...

I sat in on the AGM of the Christchurch group tonight. One of the things I discovered was that Christchurch has upwards of a teams worth of the top players in the country, if not the world, but as they all get along fairly well (as these things go), they tend to have to work hard in a short period of time to get match fit for tournements. It seems like the politics comes hand in hand with a degree of local competition that keeps teams on top of their game.
